Brodifacoum works by blocking the synthesis of prothrombin and capillary wall patency. Death occurs in 3-6 days after ingesting the bait. The bait contains denatonium benzoate (bitrex) an extremely bitter substance that prevents accidental consumption by other animals.

The grain is heat treated to combat grain weevils.
